When the Prodigal Comes Home… But the Church Doesn’t Know What to Do

Updated: Apr 15

There’s a moment that heaven celebrates…but sometimes the church goes silent.

It’s the moment when the prodigal walks back through the doors

.

Not perfect.Not polished.Not put together.

Just… back.

The Story We Love to Quote

We all know the story:

“But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”Luke 15:20 (KJV)

The father didn’t wait for an explanation. He didn’t bring up the past.He didn’t ask where he’d been.

He ran.

He embraced.

He restored.

But Here’s the Reality in Today’s Church

We preach restoration…but sometimes we practice rejection.

The prodigal walks in, and instead of love, they feel:

  • eyes watching 👀

  • whispers in corners

  • conversations they’re not part of

  • invitations they don’t receive

People remember who they used to be, instead of celebrating who they’re becoming.

The Silent Stigma

6

Sometimes it’s not loud.

It’s subtle.

It sounds like:

  • “I hope it’s real this time…”

  • “Let’s see how long they last…”

  • “You know what they did, right?”

And without saying it directly…we make them feel like they don’t fully belong.

What Scripture Actually Says

“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness…”Galatians 6:1 (KJV)
“Judge not, that ye be not judged.”Matthew 7:1 (KJV)
“For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.”Luke 15:24 (KJV)

God never told us to monitor their comeback. He told us to restore them.

🔥 The Hard Truth

If heaven is celebrating their return…why is the church hesitating?

If God has forgiven them…why are we still holding records?

If grace covered them…why are we uncovering them?

How We Should Respond

6

When the prodigal comes back, we should:

Welcome them without suspicion Not every return needs an investigation.

Love them without conditionsGrace isn’t earned—it’s given.

Include them intentionallyDon’t leave them standing on the outside.

Protect their healingStop reopening wounds God already closed.

🌱 For the One Who Came Back

If you’re the one who returned…

You don’t owe everyone your story. You don’t need their approval. You don’t have to prove your transformation.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…”Romans 8:1 (KJV)

God received you. That settles it.

✨ Final Thought

The prodigal didn’t come home to be judged…they came home to be restored.

And the church should look more like the Father…not the crowd watching from a distance.
